ISCHIA IN BRIEF.

Ischia is the biggest island in the bay of Naples. And is considered by those in the know to be the most beautiful, (though Capri is considerably more famous). Italians flock to the island for its volcanically-driven thermal spas and as well as its beaches and food.

Covering an area of 46.33 square kilometers Ischia is the eighth largest Italian island and the largest in the Bay of Naples. Neighbouring islands are Capri, Procida and Vivara.

Ischia lies an the northern latitude of 40-44 degrees and 13-55 degrees longditude eastern in the Tyrrhenian Sea. The island is divided into 6 boroughs each with its own administration, Ischia, Casamicciola Terme, Lacco Ameno, Forio, Barano and Serrara Fontana. The resident, population of the whole island is 60,000.

A volcanic island predominantly hilly, it still bears the scars of volcanic activity. The last volcanic eruption was in 1301.

The circumference is approximately 35 kms (18 miles) and its geographical position allows for a mild climate, which attracts hundreds of visitors annually. The tourist season starts at the beginning of March until the end of November.

The roughly trapezoidal island lies 17.5 miles from Naples and measures around 10 km East to West and 7 km North to South with a 34 km coastline and a surface area of 46.3 km2. It is almost entirely mountainous with the highest peak being volcanic Mt. Epomeo at 788 meters: the volcano was active in Classical times.

In fact the Greek myth of Tifeo sees him as a volcanism personification: the rebellious giant who was condemned by Jupiter at the foot of the island of Pithecusae (Greek Pithekoussai).

Ischia is also the principal city (pop.17,256) of the island, divided into Ischia Ponte and Ischia Porto. Its main industry is tourism, centering on thermal parks that cater mostly to European and Asian tourist clients eager to enjoy the fruits of the island's natural volcanic activity and highly nutritious volcanic soil.
